If you want to forget all your other troubles, wear too tight shoes. ~The Houghton Line, November 1965
The other day I studied a painting that depicted what I often think of as a long lost art – custom shoe and bootmaking. “Trimming the Shanks” by Matt Atkinson lead me to ponder how in today’s world, things are made as quickly and cheaply as possible. Craftsmanship, custom design and artistry have gone by the wayside and now manufactured goods are nothing more than assembly line turnouts.
My interest in the painting led me to the website of Matt Atkinson to find out more about the artist. What I found was unexpected. In his blog Beyond Paint and Canvas, the artist beautifully wrote of what inspired him to paint “Sundaes with Grandpa.” A scene Atkinson witnessed in a diner between grandfather and granddaughter moved him deeply. Enough to make him want to record his recollections of that day on canvas.
Don’t miss the story behind this painting! The world needs more tales of families coming together in joy after experiencing tragedy.
