“Our children no longer learn how to read the great book of nature from their own direct experience.” -Wendell Berry
Sad as it is, in this fast paced world of technology Wendell Berry’s statement is hard to argue with. Ever the optimist I hope the pause forced upon human beings by a pandemic virus will be an answer to a prayer to give the Earth more breathing room. From pictures we are seeing the skies are clearer than they’ve been in a long time.
Eden Mill Nature Center in Pylesville, MD is a place that offers children opportunity for nature education. Harford County Public Library has seized the day and joined in too with a “Story Walk.” As kids ramble along a meandering path along the riverbanks they’re able read the book “Bear Wants More” by Karma Wilson. It’s a story about what happens when springtime comes and the creatures of the earth and the forest wake up from their sleepy nap.
At the Eden Mills Nature Center there is plenty to see that makes one understand the value of opening little ones eyes to the beauty of the natural world around us. Its God’s gift to humanity and a natural healer of the worries of the world.
