A few month or so ago a blog was posted on SowtheHeart.com about lifestyle and happiness. A question was posed, something to the affect that “Why is there little correlation between living in a prosperous country such as the U.S.A. and personal happiness?”
According to the Dalai Lama XIV, if you let your happiness be affected by something political, social or economic happening in our country, it does not have to be that way nor should it. As both he and Desmond Tutu point out in The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World, “the three factors that seem to have the greatest influence on increasing our happiness is our ability to re-frame our situation more positively, our ability to experience gratitude, and our choice to be kind and generous.”
In other words, our internal words to ourselves and staying optimistic about life’s situations determine our joy, which goes much deeper than happiness.
