At the Heart of Advent
“Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more …” – Dr. Seuss
Today is the first day of Advent which brings memories of my young son’s eager anticipation of opening a little paper door on the advent calendar before he went off to school during the 24 days before Christmas. What was behind the opening made him rise even earlier than usual. The advent calendar is a simple ritual many families around the globe still use to celebrate tradition.
With the commercial aspect of Christmas it’s hard not to get caught up in the excesses. We often forget how to rejoice in a healthy way. Make your heart flutter this season for all the right reasons.
Take a few minutes during this Advent Season to share with your family, in an age appropriate manner, what Christmas is truly about.
In my award-winning memoir, Gift of a Lifetime: Finding Fulfilling Things in the Unexpected, my own story of hope and anticipation of a very special Christmas is one families can share together during the Advent Season.
