A Sense of Belonging
Lately I’ve been pondering how being involved with youth groups whether church affiliated, 4-H, the Boys & Girls Club, or scouting become fond memories later in life. I suppose these thoughts have been elicited by my few hour breeze through Savannah, Georgia. There I saw the birthplace of the founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliet Gordon Low.
Often the influences of being involved in youth organizations aren’t recognized we begin to realize the friendships provided a strong rootedness in life. With the disconnectedness of today’s society, perhaps if more children became active participants in youth groups, tatters and tears to the hearts could become sown together by a feeling of connectedness. Above al,l groups such as the Girl Scouts give children a sense of belonging.
As F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”
We all need to feel as if we are part of something,
whether we are youthful or old!
