“Once upon a time … there was the simple understanding that to sing at dawn and to sing at dusk was to heal the world through joy. The  birds still remember what we have forgotten, that the world is meant to be celebrated.” ― Terry Tempest Williams

Happy Earth Day, Everyone!

Toward the end of winter, I really dragged myself out the door to go on my daily morning walk. I felt like I was doing battle with the elements every day. So I went at my winter walks quickly to get it done, so I could get back inside to warmth and my second cup of tea of the day. Yet, I understood a walk had to be done, regardless, for my own well-being.

Now spring has arrived and my enthusiasm has returned, thank the Lord.  It is He who has given me this healthy life. I need to keep the heart fit as well as blood pumping through the brain because it helps cognitively during the aging process. This time of year I immediately hear joyous approval from the tweets from the birds. Walking in weather I enjoy, I feel serenity and peace and I want to soak it all up. I observe the  buds and blossoming of the flowers, the greening of the trees, the birds pulling the worms from the soil and listen to the beautiful birdsong. So I saunter and don’t rush through the early morning experience.

Did you know songbirds, some of God’s creatures, are helping scientists learn more about the aging brain? Here is a link to an article.

Enjoy spring! It’s a great time to get into the routine of walking regularly. It’s great for the body, mind and spirit.
